A. Frankenstein, After the Hunt: William Harnett and Other American Still Life Painters 1870-1900, Berkeley, 1969, p. 156
According to Alfred Frankenstein in After the Hunt, Jacob Atkinson was a Philadelphia letter carrier who painted as an avocation. Frankenstein records only one painting by Atkinson - a trompe l'oeil of a dollar bill owned by his daughter Carrie Atkinson and dated 1893. Frankenstein commented "If the artist had not overdriven the painted grain of his wood, this picture might well pass as a work by one of the major figures in American trompe l'oeil." A Soldier's Letter and Money is a rare, more recently discovered work by the artist.
