According to Ronald G. Pisano, Child On A Garden Path is one of Chase's intimate New York park scenes, most likely the Central Park Nursery, and was executed during the mid- to late 1880's. Prior to this period, Chase had always travelled abroad during the summer months painting plein air scenes in Spain and Holland . After his marriage in 1886, however, he remained at home in the summers, devoting his attention to capturing the beauty of the various parks in the New York area -- particularly Prospect Park and Central Park. Most of these works are relatively small, and according to one writer of the period, each was completed in half a day, with Chase's main concern being that of capturing the fleeting effects of sunlight. Kenyon Cox , a friend and fellow artist, described these paintings as "veritable little jewels...far and away the best things Mr. Chase has yet done."

This work will be included in Ronald G. Pisano's forthcoming catalogue raisonne of Chase's work.
