Lot Essay

According to Ira Glackens in a letter of April 2, 1981, this is a portrait of Penelope Roberts who was the daughter of Alice Mumford Roberts, a fellow student of the artist's at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Glackens painted Penelope in his studio at 10 West North Street, New York, in the 1920's. She later married Augustus Saint-Gaudens II, the grandson of the sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. A copy of this letter accompanies the lot.
