TWO WELL-CARVED SOAPSTONE FIGURES OF IMMORTALS SEATED ON LIONS

One depicting the immortal Lu Dongbin, holding a fan-shaped fly-whisk in one hand and with his sword hung across his back, his robes finely incised with clusters of prunus blossoms, the other rider with left hand raised as if to hold a spear, his full face well-carved below a bald head incised with fine stubble, each with traces of polychrome pigment and gilding in the incised decoration, the separate lions striding forward with heads turned to the side and mouths open in warning--8 1/2 and 9in. (21.7 and 22.9cm.) high (2)
