Maker's mark of Gorham Mfg. Co., Providence, circa 1900
Each circular, with the rim chased as sea foam, with turtles, shells, and seaweed in relief, marked on reverse ERP
8¼in. diameter; 112oz. 10dwt.
These dishes were probably made for terrapin stew, a fashionable first course at the turn of the century. Gorham made terrapin-form tureens and terrapin meat forks as well. See the large tureen sold in these Rooms, January 18, 1997, lot 16.
