Lot Essay

The screw steamship Louisiana was built in 1879 by John Roach & Son of Chester, Pennsylvania. The Louisiana sailed out of New York Harbor until 1905 , and was owned by Cromwell Line.

Antonio Jacobsen painted eleven images of the Louisiana between 1880 and 1900. These eleven are comprised of three sketches and eight oils; one of the oils is known to have been completed in 1888 and may possibly be the image offered here.
