Born in Paris, Victor De Grailly (1804-1889) trained under Jean Victor Bertin and exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon from 1833 to 1880. A prolific painter of American landscapes, De Grailly never visited the Country; instead, he relied upon the prints of William Henry Bartlett, William James Bennett and others and, in 1845, devoted an entire exhibition in Paris to his American scenes.
