The original 'Sailor' was one of two Newfoundland dogs that were brought to the Chesapeake Bay country in 1807. Sailor became the founder of the Eastern Shore strain of the Chesapeake Bay Dogs, recognized in 1877 as a distinct breed. Mr. Bartlett and Mr. Hayward were great ducking enthusiasts and two of these dogs, Sailor and Canton, were cast to grace the front entrance to their business establishment as symbols of their favorite sport, monument and talisman.
