Bowditch discovered over 8000 errors during his revision of the English work by J.H. Moore, The new practical navigator, the first American edition of which was published in Newburyport by Blunt in 1799. This compelled him to write an entirely new work, The New American Practical Navigator which was published simultaneously in England. Ten further editions were issued before Bowditch's death in 1838. Grolier/American 25 ("...the first complete epitome of practical navigation for the common man...Often termed the greatest book in all the history of navigation..."); Howes B 657 ("First accurate navigation book"); Shaw and Shoemaker 1938; Streeter sale VII, 3967.
