MARRYAT, Captain FREDERICK. The Phantom Ship. London: Henry Colburn 1839. 3 vols., 8vo, original drab boards, uncut, printed paper spine labels, worn at outer joints, ends of spines, and fore-corners, blue half morocco slipcase. FIRST (ENGLISH) EDITION. Tipped in vol. 1 following title-leaf is the autograph manuscript by Marryat of his printed dedication for the first (American) edition of The Phantom Ship, published in Philadelphia by Carey and Hart in 1838; the manuscript, one page, 8vo, reads: "To Catharine P. Ingraham of Philadelphia This work is dedicated by Her Affectionate Cousin The Author"; on the verso Marryat has written: "Phantom Ship Memorandum for Messrs. Carey & Hart." On the front free endpaper of vol. 1 is an inscription in the hand of Edward Duffield Ingraham: "The autograph dedication is that sent out to Carey & Hart, and inserted in the American Edition of 1839." On the front flyleaves of vol. 1 Ingraham has pasted news clippings of the day concerning Marryat's squabbles with his publisher Colburn and a lawsuit about a New York publisher's pirated edition (1839) of The Phantom Ship. Duffield (1793-1854) was a Philadelphia lawyer and an important book collector; his large library was auctioned by Thomas in Philadelphia in March and May 1855 and was the first bibliophilic book collection to be sold in America (see McKay 650-661, and p. 30). Catharine P. Duffield, the dedicatee of the American edition of The Phantom Ship (the English edition does not have a printed dedication) was presumably a daughter (or sister) of Edward Duffield Ingraham. Marryat was visiting America at the time (often staying in Philadelphia), perhaps accounting for this manuscript leaf being sent to Carey and Hart and then given to the Ingrahams. Sadleir 1593; Wolff 4532 (both of their copies in original half cloth). See Wolf 4533 (for the Carey and Hart edition): "Marryat was in America during 1838. I think he entered the copyright in person. Thus it is more than likely that this edition, though dated 1839, preceded the English of the same date." (3)
