Romanée-Conti--Vintage 1962
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Excellent general appearance, with deep color and level only 1½" below cork; labels slightly bin-soiled
"Whatever reservations I had - still have - about the '61 DRC
wines, 'the Domaine' performed marvellously in 1962. They were first
presented to the trade in London in Oct 1964. Romanée-Conti was
difficult to taste: dry, raw, tannic, closed; virtually undrinkable.
Still rather hard and nowhere near fully developed even after 15
years. Last tasted, in jeroboam (a double-magnum size in Burgundy),
almost exactly a quarter of a century after the grapes had been
picked. Now medium-deep, richly coloured, looking mature. When first
poured, the nose was low-keyed, rather twiggy. It took 20 minutes in
the glass to open up. After 30 minutes it was rich and toasty.
Medium-dry, full-bodied, a powerful, assertive wine with hints of
liquorice, holly, walnuts. Great length. Mouthfilling." JMB
