THE SALTONSTALL FAMILY CHIPPENDALE CARVED WALNUT HIGH CHEST-OF-DRAWERS

In two parts: the upper section with molded swan's-neck pediment centering three flame finials above three thumbmolded short drawers the center drawer fan-carved over four graduated thumbmolded long drawers; the lower section with mid-molding above one long and three short thumbmolded drawers, the center fan-carved over a shaped apron, on cabriole legs with pad-and-disc feet (center finial replaced)--95 5/8in. high, 43 1/2in. wide, 21 3/4in. deep

Lot Essay

Dr. Nathaniel Saltonstall descended from Sir Richard Saltonstall (1586-1661), one of the original settlers of Massachusetts, an investor in John Endecott's Salem plantation, and founder of Watertown, Massachusetts. Dr. Saltonstall graduated Harvard in 1766, and by 1769 was practising medicine in Haverhill and the surrounding courtryside. He married Anna White of Haverhill in 1780, and together they produced seven children; the Saltonstall high chest descended to Nathaniel, the second of their three sons. An inventory of Dr. Saltonstall's estate was filed for probate in 1815, listing a variety of household furnishings.
