General Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824-September 13, 1881) graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1847. In 1861, he organized the 1st Rhode Island Regiment and became its Colonel. Because of his pleasing personality and intense interest in the military, he became good friends with President Lincoln. General Burnside sccessfully commanded many campaigns in the Civil War, including, the brigade which opened the battle of Bull Run. The Brigadeer General was eventually commissioned a Major-General.
