A WHITE LIE FOR A GERMAN DOCTOR FLEEING THE NAZIS

"I have heard that, in a most meritorious and successful way, you have tried to do your best for the fate of medical doctors driven out of Germany. A case has been presented to me in the form of a letter which, after several other unsuccessful attempts, I would like to communicate to you. It concerns a Dr. M. Herzog...a surgeon....He has so far tried in vain to obtain the entry visa from the American Consul in Berlin. The latter demands a hiring certificate from a hospital or a doctor over here. Since the petitioner has submitted two impeccable affadavits, this constitutes unjust bureaucratic harassment. The difficulty would be taken care of if any doctor would pro forma produce such a document. I am convinced that one could very well take on such a white lie, I mean to produce a notarized certificate on the part of a colleague who in reality does not intend an actual hiring. In regard to the affadavits, of course, he would take on no risk. Would you be in the position to secure the needed documentation for the man?...."
