JOHNSON, ANDREW, President. Letter signed in full as President, to "the Honorable the Secretary of the Navy" (Gideon Welles), Executive Mansion, Washington, D.C., 27 August 1866. One page, 4to, on lined stationery with large printed heading "Executive Mansion," integral blank with docket, the ink of the letter a bit smudged, the text written in a fine, ornate secretary's hand. The President requests Welles, held over from Lincoln's old war Cabinet, to "Please insert the name of John Preston Auger, Washington, D.C. for the vacancy at the Naval Academy...."
