LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Signature as President in full, clipped from a document, with signature of William O. Seward, Secretary of State, n.p. [Washington, D.C.], n.d., one page, a small oblong, 44 x 137mm. (1 3/4 x 5 1/4 in.), clipped from a printed document, verso with inscription: "Presented to me by my friend Wm Matthews of the Office of the Secretary of the Treasury. S.C. Roberts, May l865." Lincoln's signature measuring 83mm. (3 l/4 in.) in length.
An interesting demonstration that Lincoln's autograph has been sought-after from an early date; in this case, the example was obtained by Roberts the month after the President's assassination. This is the earliest dated example known to us of a Lincoln signature with a documented collector provenance.
