A CIRCULAR WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)
meiji-taisho periods (early 20th century)
Decorated on the lid with a view of the mythological Mount Horai in the moonlight, pavilions with roof tiles of gold foil nestled in hills of gold takamaki-e studded with pines, plum and bamboo, the 'Three Friends', in gold, red and silver lacquer, undulating ribbons of clouds of gold lacquer in low relief embellished with okibirame crossing below, distant hills of togidashi rise above the pavilions and the moon is inlaid in metal, the background of the cover roiro-nuri heightened with nashiji, hirame and kimpun which is continued on the sides; the interior of the box also decorated in the same techniques with a continuation of the cloud-supported landscape above combed waves; fitted in the lower interior with a rectangular inkstone with fundame edges, a silver and soft-metal mizuire in the shape of a flying crane in a soft-metal saucer, and two brushes, a paper knife and a paper-pricker in matching roiro and mura-nashiji cases, rims silver, base roiro and hirame
