Sold with a photo certificate from Dr. Sam Segal dated London, October 23, 1991, as Pieter Claesz, and a photo certificate from Professor Ingvar Bergström dated Göteborg, October 31, 1991, as Pieter Claesz.
Segal notes that the brush strokes in the present painting are characteristic of those found in other still lives by Claesz executed around 1650. The composition and the still life objects may be compared with numerous other signed works by Claesz executed between 1645 and 1655, amongst them paintings in the Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem (dated 1645), the Hermitage, Leningrad (dated 1647), the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (dated 1647), the Bamberg Staatsgalerie (dated 1651), the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (dated 1651) and the Netherlands Office of Fine Arts (dated 1651). Claesz included the compositional detail of a pewter plate with three roemers in two other works of 1651, and a dish with several roemers can be found in at least seven other paintings by the artist.
Dr. Martina Brunner-Bulst has examined the painting in person and does not believe it to be an autograph work by Pieter Claesz. She will include it as such in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist
