A SURUGA TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650)

The round iron plate is pierced with a design of a catfish (namazu) leaping over a wave. The surface has kebori carving and the face has several dots of silver inlay to represent spray. There are iron bones on the edge--height and width 7.5cm., thickness at center 4.25mm., at edge 3.5mm.

Lot Essay

Both the style and the composition of this design are in the Suruga tradition. This is confirmed by the kuchibeni.
