A JINGO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1750)

The iron plate of squared mokko form has a hammered and polished surface. It is inlaid in brass with attributes of the gods of good fortune (Fukurokuju, Hotei and Daikoku): a sedge hat, a bag of treasure, and a mallet. The Higo style hitsu-ana are partly outlined in brass--height 7.2cm., width 6.7cm., thickness 4mm.

Lot Essay

This type of Higo tsuba, with large areas of brass inlay, nunome, and a well-hammered surface, is traditionally attributed to the earliest generations of the Shimizu Jingo school. This example may be by the third master who died in 1777.
