A LACQUER DECORATED IRON TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800), SIGNED UMEMURA

The rounded iron plate with concave surface is carved with a design of informal kiri blossoms. The raised rim and slightly rounded edge have very strong iron bones. Both hitsu-ana are in kozuka shape. The surface has a later decoration in lacquer depicting a blossoming morning glory on a bamboo trellis, signed in gold lacquer--height 8.5cm., width 8cm., thickness at center 3.5mm., at edge 7.25mm.

The iron plate is similar in style to that of the Nobuie school but is probably the work of the Iwata Norisuke school. The surface has been embellished later with lacquer decoration.
