A GOTO KO-KINKO TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (1573-1600)

The shakudo plate of four-lobed shape has a nanako decorated rim and edge inlaid with gold flower sprays. The web is carved in relief with a design of dragons and waves. The design is repeated on the reverse--height 7.1cm., width 6.5cm., thickness 5.75mm.

Lot Essay

This type of ko-kinko work has shakudo of a fine, deep black color. The plate is also thicker than usual. The combination of the nanako edge with gold flowers and the dragon in waves is unusual and suggests two influences: Ko Goto and ko-kinko.
