AN ICHIJO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED ISSHI AND KAO

The rectangular iron plate has indented corners. The face is carved in low relief and inlaid in gold and silver with a weeping cherry tree, a sukashi goose which flies up to the left, and flowing water. The reverse is similarly decorated with maple leaves floating in a river; the goose is now found on the right--height 6.5cm., width 5.9cm., thickness 2.25mm. at the center and 2.75mm. at the edge.

Lot Essay

Hashimoto Isshi (1820-1896) was a student of Goto Ichijo. He took the name Isshi in 1850. He was the most talented student of Ichijo and in his later years formed his own school which made sword fittings throughout the Meiji era (1868-1912).
