A MUSASHI SHITAHARA NAGINATA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (CIRCA 1575-1580), SIGNED BUSHU SHITAHARA [NO] JU YASUSHIGE

Configuration (sugata): naginata; length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 6 sun, 6.5 bu (50.5cm.); carving (horimono): outside: naginata-hi, inside: a branch of flowering plum.
Forging pattern (jihada): mokume.
Tempering pattern (hamon): hako-midare in clusters of three continuing into an extremely shallow toran.
Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru) with long kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): long (49.5cm.), slender, and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei): Bushu Shitahara [no] ju Yasushige.

Shirasaya.

Naginata-koshirae, Edo period (second half, 17th century), comprising: a dense nashiji saya decorated in silver and fundame hiramaki-e with Tokugawa aoi-mon and the shochikubai (pine, plum and bamboo); a sentoku kojiri, sakawa and dogane engraved with scrolling foliage; an iron ichogata ishizuki--length of koshirae 270cm.; length of saya 65.2cm.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 144671, dated Showa 43 (1968); and a tokubetsu kicho koshirae certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 109, dated Showa 43 (1968).
