A BLACK LACQUER AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL TACHI-ZUTSU
MOMOYAMA PERIOD, LATE 16TH CENTURY

The black-lacquered case decorated with seven plain, encircling bands of mother-of-pearl; the slip-on cover emblazoned on the end in mother-of-pearl with the jomon of the Hojo family of Kamakura--length 117.5cm.

A gold paper strip applied to the zutsu states that the zutsu had belonged to the (Regent) Hojo Takatoki (died 1333) and that it was for a sword by Bungo Yukihira.

Storage box with attestation inside the lid stating that the zutsu and daito were presented at Edo Castle on the 9th of December, Genroku 2 [1689] by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (ruled 1680-1709) to Shimazu Toshitaka, in celebration of his coming of age ceremony (Gempuku).
Accompanied by a certificate bearing the seal of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi giving the name of the original sword as "1000 Gourds"; and a retainer origami repeating the history noted in the hakogaki.
