LONDON, 1785, MAKER'S MARK OF THOMAS DANIELL

Of oval straight-sided form with beaded rims, bright-cut engraved with foliate scroll and flowerhead borders surrounding, on both sides, a foliate scroll, rocaille and trelliswork cartouche, with wood scroll handle and straight spout, the hinged domed cover with similar decoration and surmounted by an oval wood finial, marked under base and on cover, stamped under base SILVER-LYON FOSTER-LANE--6in. (15.2cm.) high

Lot Essay

Thomas Daniell worked at the sign of the Silver Lyon, 20 Foster Lane between 1782 and 1793. A number of pieces are known stamped with Daniell's address; Grimwade records a cup of 1786 at Lincoln College, Oxford, "Made at the Silver Lyon Foster Lane London" (The London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, 2nd ed., p.484). Daniell's trade card, advertising his London Silverplate Manufactory; at the Silver Lyon, opposite Goldsmiths'-Hall, Foster Lane, Cheapside. Carried on by Thomas Daniell and his late Father upwards of 50 years exists in two variations. A cake basket of 1786 engraved Made at the Silver Lyon Foster Lane London was sold in these Rooms October 27, 1987, lot 363.
