The inscription reads: THIS BELONGED TO GEN. JOHN MORIN SCOTT WHO DIED SEPT. 1784 AND WHO WAS GRANDFATHER OF JOHN MORIN SCOTT MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA

The crest and motto are those of Scott, as borne by John Scott, merchant of New York (1702-1733), father of John Morin Scott, discussed in the two previous lots. John Scott was the grandson of Sir John Scott, Bart., of Ancrum, Roxburghshire, Scotland.
