PAIR OF CARNELIAN, BLACK ONYX AND GOLD EAR CLIPS
Each designed as a round black onyx plaque decorated with cabochon carnelian and gold geometric motif, mounted in 18K gold, circa 1972
Signed by A. Cipullo, Cartier
Aldo Cipullo joined Cartier, New York, in 1969 after serving an apprenticeship in his native Italy, and later at David Webb. He is most famous for his modern interpretations of historical artifacts such as the "Love Bracelet" in two sections that had to be screwed together around the wrist with the aid of a screwdriver, provided by Cartier, of course.
The earclips shown here are a good example of Cicollo's use of polished stones, set into gold mountings, reminiscent of medieval goldsmith work. His choice of carnelians is influenced by Morovingian jewelry in which the color red, either gemstones or enameling, dominated jewelry design. These earclips have been signed by the designer, copyrighted, and dated 1972.
