2 vols., large folio, 528 x 370mm. (20 3/4 x 14 5/8in.), contemporary diced russia gilt, spine gilt in eight compartments with green morocco labels, spines and upper hinges cracked, upper and lower compartments of spines and corners chipped, some minor dust staining and slight soiling, mostly marginal, plate 53 in vol. 2 creased, some minor offsetting to text.
Second Edition, the first edition of Edwards's of the text, 220 hand-colored engraved plates, by Catesby and signed with his monogram, except for two plates (nos. 62[61] and 96 in vol. 2) by Georg Dionysius Ehret, plate 80 double-page with wide margins, and one double-page engraved hand-colored map in vol. 2, on watermarked Crowned Shield GR, IHS or J. Whatman paper all undated. This copy with two single dedication leaves in English: "To the Queen" in vol. 1 and "To...the Princess of Wales" in vol. 2; the 20-pp. Appendix and single Index leaf bound at end of vol. 1; 3 leaves Index to both volumes, successively in English, French and Latin at end of vol. 2 and preceded by the "Account of Carolina" (with "Vol. II" printed on the first page of each gathering). The single leaf "List of Encouragers" from the first edition and the two leaves "catalogue...with Linnaean Names" from the third edition (sometimes found in copies of the book dated 1754) are not present in this copy. Title-pages printed in red and black in English and French, bilingual text in two columns in English and French, text with ornamental woodcut initials.
