HOWE, Sir RICHARD. Autograph letter signed ("Howe") to Rear Admiral Evan Nepean Esq., "Admiralty," 27 September 1787. 2 pages, 4to. A good letter regarding military intelligence: "I am favored with the papers of Intelligence you had prepared for me. I have not any personal knowledge of Lieut. Monke; but agree with you in opinion of the impression in his favor, that his account of his late visit to the Continent would give of him. He certainly cannot be better employed than as you propose. I have not heard by any other channel of the report Lord Sydney was informed of respecting a Naval force sent to the East Indies. If it is well founded, a confirmation of it will be received...from Paris. Captain Payne...had received a letter from General Dalrymple then at Paris, signifying that as a French Force was on the March towards Holland, he was to set off immediately to that Quarter...."; Autograph letter signed ("Howe") to Lt. Edward Pellew, Bath, 9 December 1794. One page, 4to, small browned area at lower right. "I was not favored with your letter...in which V. Andre Narrative was enclosed, until I came to this place. I therefore embrace the earliest opportunity to make my acknowledgements....There are certainly some considerable inaccuracies in the publication. But I am surprised that the loss of Men professed to have been suffered in the Montaigne was judged fit to be generally circulated...." (2)
