Elongated baluster form, on spreading circular scalloped foot, the lower body elaborately repousse and chased with foliage and strapwork scrolls, applied with silver-gilt scrolling foliate grapevine, in original mahogany case marked--13in. high

Gorham's archival photograph of this vase is illustrated in Charles H. Carpenter, Jr. Gorham Silver, 1982, fig. 216, p. 205. Carpenter describes this work as "a key transition piece in Codman's work" as it represents his break from historicism and anticipates his famous Marteledesigns in the art nouveau style.
