AN IMPORTANT SILVER TANKARD
MAKER'S MARK OF JEREMIAH DUMMER, BOSTON, 1690-1705
Cylindrical, with molded foot rim; the flat-domed cover with scalloped rim, bifurcated scroll thumbpiece, and an applied cut-card escutcheon at the join; the molded scroll handle with a rat tail join, crimped wire at the hinge, and a cast cherub's-mask terminal; the body applied with a cut-card escutcheon at the lower handle join; the cover engraved with contemporary initials AHE, marked ID over a mullet in heart-shaped punch on side and cover--6 5/8in. high

Provenance
The engraved initials "AEH" are those of Alexander Huling (1665-1725) and his wife Elizabeth Wightman Huling (1664-1756), thence by descent to:

Alexander Huling, in his will dated 25 June 1725, bequeaths this tankard to his daughter, as follows: "I give to my Daughter Margaret Havens one Quarter part of my Household goods and my Silver Tankard marked AHE During her life and after her Decease to my grandson Alexander Havens." Huling's will was posted in North Kingston, Rhode Island. In the inventory following the will, this tankard was valued at #18, and the total estate at #263-13.
