Lot Essay

An identical set of six chairs, of which this may be one, was made for the Eddy family of Warren, Rhode Island in 1743 by Job Townsend. They were sold in the Flayderman Collection sale, Colonial Furniture, Silver and Decorations (New York, American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, Inc.), January 2,3,4, 1930, Lot 492. Similar chairs are in the Newport Historical Society and Winterthur Museum Collections. Two additional examples are illustrated in Ralph E. Carpenter, The Arts and Crafts of Newport, Rhode Island, 1640-1820 (Newport, 1954), p. 39, no. 13 and Michael Moses, Master Craftsmen of Newport: The Townsends and Goddards (Tenafly, New Jersey, 1984), p. 255, fig. 6.2.
