Small 4to, original composite binding (showing two binding styles available for the first edition) consisting of brown half morocco for the spine and front cover and dark purple "full seal russia" for the rear cover, sprinkled red edges, some slight rubbing, a fore-corner a bit worn, half morocco folding case. THE RARE PUBLISHER'S PROSPECTUS OR SALESMAN'S DUMMY FOR THE FIRST EDITION, consisting of preliminary leaves, selections from the text, representative illustrations by Dan Beard, publisher's advertisements, sheets at end for subscribers' names and orders (eight entries filled in), and the three binding samples mounted on inside covers (backstrips for the half morocco and the library sheep bindings at front, the front cover and spine, the latter folding out, for the green cloth gilt binding at rear), the front endpaper is of the marbled paper used with the leather bindings for the book and the rear endpaper is of paper decorated with an over-all pale green floral pattern used in the cloth binding.
