A VENETIAN ROCOCO PARCEL-GILT, CREAM-PAINTED AND POLYCHROME-DECORATED ALCOVE
PARTIALLY MID-18TH CENTURY
Comprising a rounded rectangular domed ceiling centrally cast with an oval medallion depicting an allegory of Beauty and Valour with Venus and Mars reclining amidst clouds attended by amoretti within a scrolling foliate medallion above four shaped cartouches, each centrally carved with a portrait medallion of a warrior flanked by foliate arabesques; the four incurved angles above conforming rectangular panelled corner cabinets, each fitted with two cupboard doors carved with further scrolling arabesques joined by moulded panels; the rounded rectangular crossbanded walnut parquetry floor veneered à quatre faces and inlaid with strapwork; the arched entrance flanked by pilasters headed by acanthus-carved capitals
