Lot Essay

The present lot is related to Titian's 'Madonna and Child with Saints Catherine and Luke' in the collection of Heinz Kisters, Kreuzlingen (see H.E. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, 1969, I, no. 62, pl. 53). A variant, on which the present lot is likely based, which replaces Saint Catherine with a donor, is at Hampton Court, England. Another copy of the Hampton Court picture, whose present location is unknown, passed through Christie's, London, July 3, 1953, lot 26 (Wethey, op. cit., p. 107, under no. 62)
