Lot Essay

Blue and white 'Cadogan' wine ewers were among the interesting Transitional shapes in the 'Asian Junk Cargo', Captain Michael Hatcher's first shipwreck find, dated to 1643 and sold Christie's Amsterdam, March 14/15, 1984. One of the Hatcher ewers was in the Jarras Collection, Part I, sold Christie's London, June 13, 1990. For another variation of the Transitional shape see D.F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, China Trade Porcelain, fig. 43.
