AN IWATA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The thin, four-lobed iron plate has a raised rim. The edge shows tortoise-shell and other patterns and the web is dished to the center and carved with a stone-like surface. A slightly raised design of a gourd vine and leaves with tendrils is carved on both sides--height 8.4cm., width 7.7cm., thickness 2.25mm. at the center, and 4.5mm. at the edge.

Lot Essay

This type of revival tsuba (circa 1850), in imitation of the Momoyama schools of Nobuie and others, was in fashion in Edo at this time. It is, perhaps, the work of the Iwata Norisuke school or one of the students of Suishinshi Masahide (1750-1825).
