A KYOTO SCHOOL TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (CIRCA 1575)

The thick, round iron plate is carved in an openwork design of birds in flight and a row of chrysanthemum petals around the central area--height and width 8.2cm., thickness 6.5mm.

Lot Essay

The plate of this tsuba is much thicker than the usual Kyoto openwork examples (Kyo sukashi). It would seem to be the forerunner of the thick plate used by the Akasaka school in the early Edo period (1600-1700).
