A YOKOYA SCHOOL KOZUKA
LATE EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1825), SIGNED SOMIN WITH KAO (YOKOYA SOMIN III [FL. FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY])

The plate (jiita) of shakudo is without frame and the entire ground is nanako which is applied to the edge as well. The shakudo shishi is in very high relief and has traditional gold inlay spots, the back plate is of gold with a filed (yasuri) finish--length 9.7cm., width 1.4cm., thickness 7.5mm.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 246, dated Showa 46 (1971).

Lot Essay

A document by Akitagawa Tokuemon accompanying this kozuka dated Anei 2 (1773) states that this was part of a mitokoromono made by Yokoya Somin in Genroku 15 (1702). A long history of the piece follows with later commentary in another hand.
