Thomas Hart Benton was commissioned by Louis B. Mayer to paint the original theatrical cast of A Streetcar Named Desire as a surprise Christmas gift for his daughter, Irene Selznick. The painting received attention from many notable people including the actress Jessica Tandy, as well as Look Magazine, which wanted to photograph and publish the cast of Tennessee Williams's play posed as they are in Benton's painting.
