Lot Essay

The site depicted is Bedford Park, in West London, where the artist's son Lucien owned a house at 62 Bath Road. Pissarro traveled for the fourth time to England in the spring of 1897 to be with Lucien, who had fallen ill. He began working in late May and continued painting until mid-July executing, in addition to this work, five other landscapes of the district (Venturi's nos. 1005-1009).
