This manuscript was written to accompany Ruskin's nineteen letters to Cockerell during the years 1886-1888; the letters are indicated in the margins of the manuscript at the relevant places. A version of the manuscript, with revisions and omitting at least one paragraph, was printed as the section on John Ruskin in Friends of a Lifetime: Letters to Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, ed. Viola Meynell (1940), pp. 20-61.
