These vases are derived from the celebrated model for vases-cloches created by the marchand-mercier Jean Dulac. Often incorporating pop-up candelabra and with bodies in the form of Sèvres porcelain, the model achieved great popularity among sophisticated collectors of the 1770s. A pair signed by Dulac was delivered to the king of Poland for his use at Lazienski Palace, Warsaw (illustrated in P. Verlet, les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1987, pp.72-3, figs. 66-7), while another pair from the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondeley was sold Christie's London, 8 December 1994, lot 83.
