Scenes of animals fighting were very popular with the mosaicists of the 19th century. Many of the micromosaic panels were based on the compositions of Wenceslaus Peter (1742-1829), a painter who specialised in this type of animal scene. One mosaicist who produced many similar scenes based on Peter's works was Filippo Puglieschi who was active in Rome during the first half of the 19th century.
