Lot Essay

Flaxman's design for the 'Marriage of Cupid and Psyche' was based on 'The Marlborough Gem', an antique intaglio in the collection of the Duke of Marlborough. Its pendant 'Sacrifice to Hymen' has traditionally been ascribed to Flaxman. See Robin Reilly, Wedgwood, London, 1989, Vol. I, fig. 851
