Wittemberg: Georg Rhau 1544. Folio, 297 x 190 mm. (11 11/16 x 7 1/2 in.), contemporary German binding of blind-stamped calf over beech boards, covers with roll-tooled border of stars on diaper-patterned ground enclosing central panel with two vertical floral roll-tools and repeated impressions of three fleur-de-lys, imperial eagle and small star tools, spine blind-panelled, two brass and leather fore-edge clasps, vellum pastedown endleaves, slightly rubbed, title soiled and stained, 2-inch tears to K1 entering woodcut and to L1 touching a few letters of text, a few short marginal tears or repairs, some fraying and softening to edges, mostly marginal soiling, faint dampstaining to last few quires. Collation: A-P6 Q4. 94 leaves. 2 parts in one, continuously paginated, gothic type, titles printed within the same woodcut border showing Christ before the crucifixion, part 1 title printed in red and black, 14 FULL-PAGE WOODCUTS BY LUCAS CRANACH, the second (on K2r) with his initials and winged serpent device, dated 1509, four others with serpent device only, woodcut initials. Numerous partially inked impressions of printing furniture.
EXTREMELY RARE collection of sermons by Luther, Johannes Rimeus, Urbanus Rhegius, and Johann Bugenhagen. Cranach's woodcuts of the Passion illustrate the second part, an interpretation of the gospels by Bugenhagen. The woodcuts were first printed in 1509, with a Latin text; the present German text appears to have been first published in 1539 (BM/STC German lists a Low German edition of 1531). All editions are rare. Bartsch 280; BM/STC German, p. 114; Brunet II, 405 (1539 edition), Hollstein 6:10-23, no editions in Adams or Fairfax Murray German. One copy in NUC (MB).
