Lot Essay

The Copper Cardinal Series was begun by Andre in Turin, Italy in 1972. The first seventeen of the series were completed by 1977 in New York. The works consist of square plates arranged in formation according to the mathematical character of the number of plates. If the number of plates is a primary number, indivisible by any number other than one, the Copper Cardinal is arranged in a linear format. If the number of plates is a composite number, or divisible by other numbers, the Copper Cardinal is arranged in either a rectangle or a square. In this work, the correct installation is a square format with one side of the square abutting a wall.
