To Sang-Bong was born in Heung Won in South Ham Kyung Province. He graduated from the Tokyo University of Arts in the Western-style painting division in 1927 and showed in group exhibitions at the Tokyo Art School between 1929 and 1931. From 1930 to 1975 To Sang-Bong held twenty one-man exhibitions and participated regularly in the "National" exhibitions in Seoul between 1949 and 1961. In 1957 he was represented in the exhibition of "Korean Modern Art" at the World House Gallery in New York. Among several awards, To Sang-Bong has received the Korean Cultural Award and the Mo Ran Jang Award, both in 1970.
