This image was one of twenty used to illustrate Marah Ellis Ryan's novel The Flute of the Gods and only one of three images from the book to be made as an orotone.

Lot Essay

The legend reads: Fire has with many of the Indian tribes been an important feature of all of their ceremonials. To them it came as a gift from the gods. In the Southwest region where the Indians lived the villages of some of the tribes have fire shrines or altars in secret places in high mountains. At these shrines occur many of their important rites.
